My Labrador, Buddy, has never been subtle about his love for treats. He hears the crinkle of a snack bag from three rooms away, and the moment you hand him one, his whole body wags like it’s his birthday. But one afternoon, instead of devouring his treat on the spot like he usually does, Buddy decided to hide it.
And what followed was the most unintentionally hilarious performance I’ve ever seen.
The Moment It Began
It started with a peanut butter biscuit—a big one. I’d just returned from the store and thought I’d surprise him. As soon as I gave it to him, instead of plopping down to chew it, Buddy froze. He looked at the biscuit, then at me, then back at the biscuit again.
That’s when I realized he had a plan.
The First Hiding Spot
Buddy trotted into the living room and approached the couch. He lowered the biscuit onto the carpet, then used his nose to nudge at the imaginary “dirt” around it, as if covering it up. Problem was, there was no dirt.
I couldn’t help but laugh as he kept shoving his nose into the carpet fibers like he was burying treasure in sand.
When he was done, he stepped back, clearly proud of his work—never mind that the biscuit was still in plain sight.

Attempt Two: The Pillow Disguise
Apparently realizing his first spot wasn’t very stealthy, Buddy grabbed the biscuit again and carried it to the armchair. There, he pushed it under a throw pillow with his snout, pausing to check if I was watching.
Unfortunately for him, about half the biscuit stuck out from under the pillow. He looked at it, looked at me, and let out a little frustrated huff.
Attempt Three: The Curtain Gambit
By now, I was following him around like a reality show cameraman. Buddy padded over to the window, biscuit in mouth, and tried to tuck it behind the long curtains. He wedged it between the fabric folds, stepped back, and seemed satisfied—until gravity took over, and the biscuit fell with a soft thud.
Buddy’s expression was priceless. You could almost see the thought bubble over his head: “Seriously?!”
The Final “Secure” Location
After pacing for a moment, Buddy seemed to decide on a more permanent solution. He headed to the laundry room, where a pile of clean towels was waiting to be folded.
In a move that showed both ingenuity and complete lack of stealth, he buried the biscuit right in the middle of the pile, using his nose to push the towels around until only the tiniest corner of the treat was visible.
This time, he seemed convinced it was safe. He gave one last satisfied sniff, trotted out of the room, and flopped down on his bed with the air of someone who’d just completed a successful mission.
The Big Reveal
About an hour later, my husband came home and went to put away the laundry. I heard him call from the other room: “Uh… why is there a dog biscuit in here?”
Buddy’s head shot up, ears perked, and before I could answer, he sprinted into the laundry room. He snatched the biscuit from the towels, ran to his bed, and finally ate it—fast, as if he was making sure it wouldn’t be “stolen” again.
Why It Was So Funny
What made the whole thing so entertaining wasn’t just the hiding attempts—it was the seriousness with which Buddy approached the task. Every nudge, every glance over his shoulder, every change of location was done with the focus of a professional thief in a heist movie.
But at the same time, each attempt was hilariously flawed. From the clearly visible carpet “burial” to the pillow that barely covered the treat, Buddy’s hiding skills were about as effective as leaving a neon sign that said TREASURE HERE.
The Lesson from Buddy’s Mission
I’ve since learned that hiding treats is a natural behavior for some dogs, a throwback to their instincts. But in Buddy’s case, I think it’s as much about the fun of the game as it is about saving the snack for later.
He still tries it from time to time—though now I know to check the couch cushions before guests arrive.
Why It Stuck With Me
In a world where so much feels serious and rushed, watching Buddy take half an afternoon to find the “perfect” hiding place for a single biscuit reminded me how joy can live in the smallest, silliest moments.
It’s just a dog and a snack, but somehow, it’s also a comedy show, a mystery, and a heartwarming reminder of why we love our pets.
Final Thought
Sometimes the funniest things aren’t planned—they’re just a dog, a biscuit, and the belief that if you push hard enough with your nose, you can hide anything.
